Mary Decker

Mary Decker, born on August 4, 1958, is a celebrated American retired middle-distance and long-distance runner. Throughout her illustrious career, she achieved remarkable success, winning gold medals in both the 1500 meters and 3000 meters at the 1983 World Championships. Decker's prowess on the track was further highlighted by her status as the world-record holder in the mile, 5000 meters, and 10,000 meters.

In total, she set an impressive seventeen official and unofficial world records, making history as the first woman to break the four minute and twenty second barrier for the mile. Her dominance extended to the national level, where she established thirty-six U.S. national records across distances ranging from 800 meters to 10,000 meters. Notably, her records in the 2000 meters and 3000 meters have remained unbroken since the early 1980s.

Decker's legacy is marked by her extraordinary achievements, including a remarkable thirty-two year hold on her 1500 meters record and a thirty-eight year hold on her mile record. In recognition of her contributions to athletics, she was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2003. However, her career was not without controversy, as she faced a retroactive two-year ban in June 1996 due to a doping violation related to a high testosterone to epitestosterone ratio.
