Before her iconic role in animation, Catlett showcased her talents on stage, originating the role of Ernestina in the 1964 Broadway production of Hello, Dolly! Her career spans several decades, during which she has performed in numerous Off-Broadway and Broadway musicals, often embracing lighthearted and humorous roles. Additionally, she portrayed Pearl Gallagher, the third housekeeper on the classic sitcom Diff'rent Strokes.
