Mary Read

Mary Read, an enigmatic figure of the early eighteenth century, was an English pirate who carved her name into the annals of maritime history. Born in England, much of her early life remains shrouded in mystery. According to Captain Charles Johnson's 1724 account in 'A General History of the Pyrates', she spent her childhood disguised as a boy, eventually joining the military before making her way to the West Indies.

In the Bahamas, Read crossed paths with the notorious pirate John Rackham. In August of 1720, she joined his crew alongside fellow pirate Anne Bonny. Together, they seized the sloop William from John Ham in Nassau, marking the beginning of their audacious exploits against merchant vessels in the Caribbean.

However, their piratical adventures came to an abrupt end in October 1720 when they were captured by former privateer Jonathan Barnet after a brief naval confrontation near Jamaica. While Rackham and his male crew faced trial and execution, Read and Bonny managed to delay their fates by claiming to be pregnant.

Mary Read's life came to a tragic conclusion while imprisoned in Spanish Town, where she died in April of 1721 under circumstances that remain unknown. Her legacy, intertwined with that of Anne Bonny, continues to captivate the imagination, representing the rare presence of women in the world of piracy during the Golden Age.
