Mary Treat

Mary Treat, born on September seventh, eighteen thirty, was a remarkable American naturalist whose work spanned the fields of botany, zoology, and entomology. As a dedicated scientific collector and writer, she made significant contributions to the understanding of plant and animal life, earning her a place among the notable figures of her time.

Throughout her career, Treat corresponded with the renowned naturalist Charles Darwin, sharing insights and discoveries that would influence the scientific community. Her extensive research led to the identification of five species of plants and animals that bear her name, a testament to her impact on the fields she loved.

Among her notable discoveries is the amaryllis known as Zephyranthes treatae, as well as an oak gall wasp species called Belonocnema treatae. Additionally, she identified three ant species: Aphaenogaster mariae, Aphaenogaster treatae, and Dolichoderus mariae, further showcasing her diverse expertise and passion for the natural world.
