Masaki Watanabe

Masaki Watanabe, born in Nagano in nineteen eleven, was a pioneering Japanese orthopedic surgeon renowned for his contributions to modern arthroscopy. He graduated from Tokyo Imperial University in nineteen thirty-seven, where he studied under the esteemed Professor Kenji Takagi, a trailblazer in the early use of endoscopic devices.

After World War II, Watanabe took on the role of director of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Tokyo Teishin Hospital. During the nineteen fifties, he made significant advancements in arthroscopic technology, culminating in the introduction of the Watanabe no 21 arthroscope in nineteen fifty-eight, which featured a superior handmade lens.

His influence extended beyond Japan; in nineteen sixty-four, Canadian orthopedic surgeon Robert W. Jackson encountered Watanabe while visiting Tokyo with the Canadian Olympic team. This meeting was pivotal in bringing modern arthroscopic techniques to North America.

In nineteen seventy-two, Watanabe co-founded the International Arthroscopy Association, further solidifying his legacy in the field. His remarkable contributions were recognized in nineteen eighty-three when he received the prestigious Asahi Prize.
