Masoud Pezeshkian, born on September twenty-ninth, nineteen fifty-four, in Mahabad, West Azerbaijan, is a prominent Iranian politician and former cardiac surgeon. He has made history as the ninth president of Iran, assuming office in 2024 at the age of sixty-nine. Pezeshkian's roots trace back to an Iranian Azerbaijani and Iranian Kurdish family, and he graduated from the Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, where he earned his medical degree.
His medical career began during the Iran–Iraq War, where he served as a doctor for Iranian soldiers from nineteen eighty to nineteen eighty-eight. Pezeshkian's political journey commenced in nineteen ninety-seven when he joined Mohammad Khatami's administration as Deputy Health Minister. He later held the position of Minister of Health and Medical Education from two thousand one to two thousand five, and he was elected to the Iranian parliament five times, representing the Tabriz, Osku, and Azarshahr electoral district from two thousand eight to twenty twenty-four.
During his tenure in parliament, Pezeshkian served as the First Deputy Speaker from two thousand sixteen to two thousand twenty. He positioned himself as a moderate candidate in the political landscape, participating in the presidential elections of two thousand thirteen and two thousand twenty-one, although he withdrew and was rejected, respectively.
