Master Theodoric

Master Theodoric, known in Latin as Magister Theodoricus, was a prominent Czech painter active during the late fourteenth century. His career flourished around the years of thirteen sixty to thirteen eighty, marking him as the most well-documented Gothic painter in Bohemia. Theodoric's artistic prowess earned him the esteemed title of the favorite court painter for Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor, establishing him as a significant figure in the realm of medieval art.

Regarded as the chief representative of the International Gothic phase known as the 'Soft style', Theodoric's work is characterized by its delicate and refined aesthetic. His most celebrated masterpiece, the Chapel of the Holy Cross at Karlštejn Castle, showcases a remarkable series of slightly over-lifesize, half-length panel portraits of saints and notable figures, all set against a shimmering gold ground. This grand decoration was commissioned in the year of thirteen fifty-nine and took several years to complete, resulting in a unique artistic achievement that was unprecedented north of the Alps.

Theodoric's oeuvre stands out as a singular contribution to European art, with no comparable works emerging after the mid-fourteenth century. His legacy continues to resonate, as he remains a pivotal figure in the history of Gothic painting, leaving an indelible mark on the artistic landscape of his time.
