Mataswintha

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Mataswintha

Mataswintha, born in the year five hundred eighteen, was a prominent figure in the Ostrogothic kingdom, known for her royal lineage as the daughter of Eutharic and Amalasuintha. She was the sister of Athalaric, who held the title of King of the Ostrogoths. Their maternal grandparents were none other than the illustrious Theodoric the Great and Audofleda, which placed Mataswintha in a significant position within the Gothic nobility.

Her life was marked by tumultuous events, particularly following the tragic death of her mother. According to historical accounts, Mataswintha was compelled to marry Vitiges, a decision that came in the wake of familial strife, including the murder of her mother and her cousin Theodahadus. This marriage, however, did not yield any offspring.

After the fall of Vitiges, Mataswintha's fortunes shifted when she married Germanus, a patrician ordinary and cousin of Emperor Justinian. From this union, she bore a son named Germanus, who was born shortly after his father's death, around the late fifth century. Although little is known about his life, he may have been the same Germanus who became a notable senator during the reign of Emperor Maurice.

Despite the challenges she faced, including the loss of her husband and the political upheavals of her time, Mataswintha chose to remain a widow, demonstrating a remarkable strength of character. Her legacy continued through her son, who would eventually connect with the imperial family through marriage, further intertwining the Ostrogothic lineage with the Byzantine elite.
