Matilda of Boulogne

Matilda of Boulogne, born in 1105, was a formidable countess and queen who played a pivotal role in the tumultuous period known as the Anarchy. As the countess of Boulogne from 1125 and queen of England through her marriage to King Stephen from 1135 until her death, she was a key supporter of her husband in his struggle against their cousin, Empress Matilda, for the English throne.

The daughter of Count Eustace III of Boulogne, Matilda inherited significant estates in both France and England. Her marriage to Stephen of Blois was orchestrated by her maternal uncle, King Henry I of England, who had intended for his daughter, Empress Matilda, to succeed him. However, upon Henry's death in 1135, Stephen ascended to the throne, and Matilda was crowned queen in 1136.

As civil war erupted in 1138, Matilda stood by her husband, participating in military campaigns and diplomatic efforts. She successfully led a siege of Dover and brokered peace with King David I of Scotland, while also forming an alliance with King Louis VII of France. Following Stephen's capture at the battle of Lincoln in 1141, Matilda took charge of their faction, rallying support and leading her forces to reclaim London from her cousin.

Beyond her military endeavors, Matilda was deeply involved in governance and church affairs. She was a patron of various religious orders and founded several abbeys, including those at Coggeshall, Faversham, and Lillechurch. Her influence extended to the succession plans for their son Eustace, although after her death, Stephen ultimately recognized the empress's son, Henry, as his heir, marking the end of the Anarchy.
