Hummels began his football journey at the Bayern Munich youth academy, where he honed his talents before embarking on a loan spell with Borussia Dortmund in January 2008. His official transfer to Dortmund occurred in February 2009 for a fee of four million euros. After a successful tenure, he returned to Bayern Munich in 2016, where he enjoyed a triumphant period, winning the Bundesliga in every season he played there.

After making over five hundred appearances for Dortmund, Hummels contributed to the club's success by winning the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal twice. He also played a pivotal role in the team's journey to the UEFA Champions League finals in 2013 and 2024. Following a season with Roma in Italy, he announced his retirement from professional football in 2025.
