Matt Groening

Matt Groening, born on February 15, 1954, in Portland, Oregon, is a renowned American cartoonist and animator celebrated for his groundbreaking contributions to television and comics. He first gained recognition with his comic strip Life in Hell, which debuted in 1977 and ran until 2012. The strip's unique style and humor caught the attention of producer James L. Brooks, leading to a pivotal moment in Groening's career.

In 1985, Groening was approached to create animated segments for The Tracey Ullman Show. To retain ownership rights, he devised a new set of characters, resulting in the birth of the iconic Simpson family. This innovation led to the launch of The Simpsons in 1989, which has since become the longest-running American primetime television series and animated sitcom.

Following the success of The Simpsons, Groening co-created Futurama in 1997 with writer David X. Cohen. This animated series, set in the year 3000, premiered in 1999 and enjoyed a successful run on Fox, followed by additional seasons on Comedy Central and Hulu. In 2016, he expanded his creative repertoire with the Netflix series Disenchantment, which premiered in 2018.

Throughout his illustrious career, Groening has garnered numerous accolades, including 14 Primetime Emmy Awards—12 for The Simpsons and 2 for Futurama. His contributions to the field of comedy were recognized with a British Comedy Award in 2004, and he received the National Cartoonist Society Reuben Award in 2002 for Life in Hell. In a testament to his impact on entertainment, Groening was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on February 14, 2012.
