Matt Leanderson

Matt Leanderson, born on March eleventh, nineteen thirty-one, was an accomplished American rower hailing from Seattle, Washington. He spent his formative years in Alderwood Manor and graduated from Edmonds High School, where his passion for rowing began to flourish.

In nineteen fifty-two, Leanderson made his mark on the international stage as the stroke of the American boat in the Olympic Four with coxswain event at the Summer Olympics. Despite the absence of their coach during the competition, Leanderson took the reins, leading his team to a commendable bronze medal finish with a time of seven minutes and thirty-seven seconds, just half a second shy of the silver medalists from Switzerland.

Following his Olympic success, Leanderson transitioned into coaching, first at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He later moved on to the University of Washington, where he served as the head coach of the freshman crew team from nineteen fifty-nine to nineteen sixty-seven. His coaching career continued at Western Washington University, where he dedicated himself to developing young rowers from nineteen seventy-seven until nineteen ninety-three.

In recognition of his contributions to the sport, Leanderson was inducted into the Western Washington University Hall of Fame in nineteen ninety-eight and the University of Washington Hall of Fame in two thousand two. He passed away in Kirkland, Washington, and is interred at Evergreen Washelli Memorial Park.
