Matthew Robert Rudolph Wiebe, known as Matt Wiebe, is a prominent Canadian politician who has been serving as the Minister of Justice and Attorney General for Manitoba since October eighteen, twenty twenty-three. A dedicated member of the New Democratic Party of Manitoba (NDP), he represents the electoral district of Concordia, where he has made significant contributions to the province's political landscape.
Born in nineteen seventy-nine and raised in the vibrant northeast Winnipeg suburb of East Kildonan, Wiebe's educational journey began at River East Collegiate, from which he graduated in nineteen ninety-seven. He furthered his studies at the University of Winnipeg, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics, followed by a master's degree in public administration.
Wiebe's political career took off when he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba in a by-election on March second, two thousand ten, succeeding former premier Gary Doer. He has since been re-elected in the general elections of two thousand eleven, two thousand sixteen, two thousand nineteen, and two thousand twenty-three. His previous roles include serving as Whip for the NDP during its time as the Official Opposition and as the Critic for the departments of Municipal Relations and Infrastructure from two thousand nineteen to two thousand twenty-three.
Before stepping into the role of an MLA, Wiebe gained valuable experience as a constituency assistant in the offices of Gary Doer at the provincial level and NDP Member of Parliament Bill Blaikie at the federal level. His extensive background in both local and national politics has equipped him with the skills necessary to navigate the complexities of governance in Manitoba.
