Matteo Bartoli

Matteo Bartoli, born on November twenty-second, eighteen seventy-three, was a distinguished Italian linguist hailing from Istria. He pursued his academic journey at the University of Vienna, where he earned his doctorate. His intellectual development was notably shaped by the philosophies of Benedetto Croce and the linguistic theories of Karl Vossler. Further enriching his expertise, Bartoli studied under Jules Gilliéron in Paris, where he cultivated a strong affinity for fieldwork.

From nineteen hundred onwards, Bartoli dedicated himself to the dialectological study of Istrian dialects, producing a wealth of research that contributed significantly to the field. In nineteen oh seven, he ascended to the position of professor of the comparative history of classical and neo-Latin languages at the University of Turin, a role he maintained until his passing.

Among his notable contributions to linguistics is his comprehensive study of the Dalmatian language, encapsulated in his two-volume work, Das Dalmatische, published in nineteen oh six. Additionally, he authored Introduzione alla neolinguistica in nineteen twenty-five and Saggi di linguistica spaziale in nineteen forty-five. Bartoli's influence extended to his students, including the renowned Antonio Gramsci, marking him as a pivotal figure in the academic landscape of his time.
