Matteo I Visconti

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Matteo I Visconti

Matteo I Visconti, born on August fifteenth, twelve fifty, was a prominent military figure and the second member of the illustrious Visconti family to govern Milan. He was the son of Teobaldo Visconti and Anastasia Pirovano, and his rise to power was marked by significant political maneuvering and familial connections.

In the year twelve eighty-seven, Matteo was appointed as capitano del popolo of Milan by his uncle, Ottone Visconti, who was the archbishop and the first lord of the city. Following his uncle's passing in twelve ninety-five, Matteo ascended to the position of lord of Milan, where he played a crucial role in the region's governance.

Throughout his rule, Matteo was frequently designated as Imperial Vicar over the entirety of Lombardy. With the support of his sons, he expanded his influence into Piedmont, Emilia, Bologna, and Genoa. However, his tenure was fraught with challenges, particularly the ongoing power struggle between the Papacy and the Empire in northern Italy.

Ultimately, Matteo faced severe accusations, including necromancy, which led to his excommunication. As tensions escalated, he made the difficult decision to renounce his title as 'General Lord of the Milanese People.' Shortly after resigning, he passed away, leaving behind a legacy that would be continued by his son, Galeazzo I.
