Matteo Messina Denaro, born on April 26, 1962, in Castelvetrano, Italy, emerged as a notorious figure in the world of organized crime. Known as Diabolik, a nod to the infamous comic book character, he rose to prominence within the Cosa Nostra following the arrests of key leaders such as Bernardo Provenzano in April 2006 and Salvatore Lo Piccolo in November 2007. His ascent marked a significant shift in the power dynamics of the Sicilian Mafia.

Denaro's notoriety escalated dramatically on April 12, 2001, when he graced the cover of L'Espresso magazine, which boldly declared him the new Mafia boss. His criminal activities led him to become a fugitive in 1993, placing him on the Italian Ministry of the Interior's most wanted list. By 2010, Forbes recognized him as one of the ten most wanted and powerful criminals globally, solidifying his reputation as a formidable figure in organized crime.

With the deaths of his predecessors, Provenzano in 2016 and Salvatore Riina in 2017, Messina Denaro was viewed as the unchallenged boss of all bosses within the Mafia. After three decades evading capture, he was apprehended on January 16, 2023, in Palermo, Sicily, while undergoing chemotherapy under an alias. His long-standing evasion of law enforcement came to an end, but his health deteriorated rapidly.
