Matthew Coon Come

Matthew Coon Come, born in nineteen fifty-six near Mistissini, Quebec, is a prominent Canadian politician and activist of Cree descent. His early education took place at LaTuque Indian Residential School, a part of the controversial residential school system in Canada. This formative experience shaped his understanding of the challenges faced by Indigenous peoples.

After completing his education, Coon Come pursued political science at Trent University and later studied law at McGill University. His academic background laid the groundwork for a career dedicated to advocating for the rights of First Nations peoples.

In nineteen eighty-seven, Coon Come was elected as the grand chief and chairman of Quebec's Grand Council of the Crees. His leadership was marked by a commitment to defending the fundamental rights of Indigenous communities, particularly during his notable campaign against the Quebec government's James Bay hydroelectric project. This initiative brought him international recognition and solidified his role as a key figure in Indigenous rights advocacy.

From two thousand to two thousand three, Coon Come served as the National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, further amplifying his voice on critical issues affecting First Nations across Canada. His dedication to social justice and Indigenous rights continues to inspire many.
