Matthew Francis Ustrzycki, born on March 25, 1932, is a distinguished Canadian prelate who has made significant contributions to the Roman Catholic Church. He was ordained as a priest on May 30, 1959, marking the beginning of a dedicated vocation in service to his faith and community.
On May 10, 1985, Ustrzycki was appointed by Pope John Paul II as the Titular Bishop of Nationa and Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Hamilton. His episcopal ordination took place on July 3 of the same year, with Bishop Anthony F. Tonnos presiding over the ceremony, alongside co-consecrators Archbishop Joseph Lawrence Wilhelm and Bishop John Michael Sherlock.
In 1986, Ustrzycki established his residence at the Church of Our Lady Immaculate in Guelph, fulfilling the vision of the city's founder, John Galt, who desired a bishop to reside in the area. This move underscored his commitment to the local community and the church's mission.
After decades of dedicated service, Ustrzycki's tenure as Auxiliary Bishop came to a close when Pope Benedict XVI accepted his resignation on June 1, 2007. Even in retirement, his legacy continues to inspire many within the diocese and beyond.
