The Honorable Matthew Hamilton Gault, born on July eighteenth, eighteen twenty-two, was a prominent Irish-Canadian financier and politician. He made significant contributions to the financial landscape of Canada, notably founding Sun Life Financial in Montreal, Canada East, in eighteen sixty-five. This venture would go on to become one of the leading insurance companies in the country.
Gault's political career began to flourish when he was elected to the House of Commons of Canada during the eighteen seventy-eight election, representing the riding of Montreal West. As a member of the Conservative Party, he was re-elected in eighteen eighty-two, serving diligently until his untimely death in June of eighteen eighty-seven.
During the colder months, Gault resided with his family at Braehead, a distinguished home located in Montreal's Golden Square Mile. His legacy continued through his family, as he was the brother of Andrew Frederick Gault and the uncle of Brigadier-General Andrew Hamilton Gault, both of whom carried on the family name in their respective fields.
