Matthew of Edessa

Matthew of Edessa, born in the year one thousand one hundred, emerged as a prominent Armenian chronicler in the twelfth century. Hailing from the historic city of Edessa, he played a significant role in documenting the tumultuous events of his time, particularly those surrounding the Bagratuni Kingdom of Armenia.

As the superior abbot of Karmir Vank, located near the town of Kaysun and east of Marash, Matthew was deeply entrenched in the religious and cultural life of his community. His position allowed him to witness firsthand the intricate dynamics of power and conflict that characterized the region during the early Crusades.

Matthew's writings provide invaluable insights into the battles between the Byzantines and Arabs, as they vied for control over parts of northern Syria and eastern Asia Minor. His chronicles not only reflect the historical events but also capture the spirit and resilience of the Armenian people during a period of significant upheaval.
