Matthew Upson, born on April 18, 1979, is a distinguished English former professional footballer renowned for his role as a centre back. His career spanned several clubs, showcasing his talent on both domestic and international stages, including representing England at the 2010 World Cup.
Upson began his football journey with Luton Town, a club in Bedfordshire, before making a significant move to Arsenal in May 1997 for a fee of two million pounds. Despite his potential, he faced challenges in securing a regular spot in the first team at Highbury, accumulating fifty-seven appearances over six seasons. During this time, he also gained valuable experience through loan spells at Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, and Reading.
In 2003, Upson joined Birmingham City, where he found his footing and enjoyed consistent first-team action. However, after Birmingham's relegation in 2006, he transferred to West Ham United in January 2007 for a fee of seven and a half million pounds. His leadership qualities shone through when he was appointed captain in 2009, following the exit of Lucas Neill.
Upson's tenure at West Ham came to an end after the 2010–11 season when the club faced relegation to the Championship. Subsequently, he signed a two-year contract with Stoke City in August 2011. His career continued with a loan to Brighton & Hove Albion during the 2012–13 season, after which he secured a one-year contract with the club in 2013, marking the final chapter of his professional playing days.
