Matthias de l'Obel

Matthias de l'Obel, born in Lille, Flanders, in the year fifteen thirty-eight, was a distinguished Flemish physician and botanist whose contributions to the field of botany were groundbreaking. He pursued his studies at the esteemed University of Montpellier, where he honed his medical expertise, which he later practiced across the Low Countries and England.

Throughout his illustrious career, de l'Obel served as a personal physician to two monarchs, showcasing his esteemed position in the medical community. His work was pivotal in the sixteenth-century Flemish School of Botany, where he authored a series of significant treatises on plants, written in both Latin and Dutch, that would influence generations of botanists.

One of his notable achievements was his recognition of the distinction between monocotyledons and dicotyledons, a fundamental classification in botany that remains relevant today. His legacy is further immortalized in the plant genus Lobelia, named in his honor, as well as Lobel's maple, Acer lobelii, which reflects his lasting impact on the study of plants.
