Mattias Öhlund

Mattias Öhlund, born on September ninth, nineteen seventy-six, is a distinguished former professional ice hockey player from Sweden, renowned for his role as a defenceman in the National Hockey League (NHL). His journey began in the Swedish Allsvenskan, where he played two seasons with Piteå HC before being selected thirteenth overall by the Vancouver Canucks in the nineteen ninety-four NHL entry draft.

Öhlund's career took a significant turn when he joined Luleå HF in the Elitserien, Sweden's premier hockey league, where he celebrated victory by winning the Le Mat Trophy in nineteen ninety-six. He made his NHL debut with the Canucks in the nineteen ninety-seven to ninety-eight season, embarking on an impressive eleven-year tenure that saw him become the franchise's all-time leader in points for a defenceman, a record later surpassed by Quinn Hughes.

After a successful stint in Vancouver, Öhlund concluded his professional career with the Tampa Bay Lightning, retiring in two thousand eleven. His career, however, was marred by injuries, including a serious eye injury prior to his third NHL season, which contributed to him only playing a full season twice throughout his thirteen-year NHL journey.

On the international stage, Öhlund proudly represented Sweden in various tournaments, starting with three World Junior Championships, where he earned Best Defenceman honors during a silver medal run in nineteen ninety-six. His international accolades include a gold medal at the World Championships in nineteen ninety-eight and another gold at the Olympic Games in two thousand six.
