Mauregatus

Mauregatus, a notable figure in the history of Asturias, was born in the year eight hundred. He rose to prominence as a warrior and ruler, famously usurping the throne following the death of Silo, the husband of his half-sister Adosinda. This act earned him the moniker 'the Usurper,' as he challenged the nobility's choice of Alfonso II, who had been elected at Adosinda's behest.

With a formidable army of supporters, Mauregatus forced Alfonso into exile in Álava, marking the beginning of his reign. His rule, which lasted from seven hundred eighty-three to seven hundred eighty-nine, was characterized by a controversial agreement with Moorish rulers, known as the 'Tribute of the 100 Maidens.' This arrangement purportedly involved the annual gifting of one hundred Asturian virgins to the Moors in exchange for their support during his ascent to power.

Despite the folklore surrounding his reign, Mauregatus's rule came to an end after six years when he died of natural causes in the year seven hundred eighty-nine. He was laid to rest in the Church of San Juan Apóstol y Evangelista in Pravia. Following his death, the throne passed to Bermudo I, marking a new chapter in the history of Asturias.
