Maurice Leblanc

Maurice Leblanc, born on November eleventh, eighteen sixty-four, was a distinguished French writer and novelist, celebrated primarily for his creation of the iconic gentleman thief and detective, Arsène Lupin. This character, often regarded as the French equivalent of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, first graced the pages of the magazine Je sais tout in a serialized format starting on July fifteenth, nineteen oh five.

By nineteen oh seven, Leblanc had transitioned to crafting full-length novels featuring Lupin, whose popularity allowed him to dedicate the majority of his literary career to this character. Despite the acclaim and commercial success, Leblanc, much like Conan Doyle, experienced a sense of ambivalence towards Lupin's fame, attempting to introduce other characters such as private eye Jim Barnett, only to ultimately merge them with Lupin.

In addition to his work on the Lupin series, Leblanc ventured into science fiction, producing notable novels such as Les Trois Yeux in nineteen nineteen, which explores a scientist's contact with three-eyed Venusians, and Le Formidable Evènement in nineteen twenty, depicting an earthquake that forms a new landmass between England and France.

Leblanc's contributions to literature were recognized with the prestigious Légion d'Honneur. He passed away in Perpignan in nineteen forty-one and was laid to rest in Montparnasse Cemetery. His sister, Georgette Leblanc, also played a significant role in his life.
