Max Ernst

Max Ernst, born on April 2, 1891, in Brühl, was a German-born painter, sculptor, printmaker, graphic artist, and poet. Despite lacking formal artistic training, he emerged as a pivotal figure in the Dada movement and surrealism in Europe. His innovative spirit led to the creation of frottage, a technique involving pencil rubbings of textured objects, and grattage, where paint is scraped across canvas to reveal underlying imprints.

Ernst's artistic journey began in 1909 while he was studying at the University of Bonn, where he became associated with the Die Rheinischen Expressionisten group. His work is characterized by ironic juxtapositions of grotesque elements alongside cubist and expressionist motifs. A recurring theme in his art is his fascination with birds, often represented through his alter ego, Loplop.

His experiences as a soldier during World War I profoundly impacted him, leaving him shocked and critical of the modern world. During World War II, while residing in France, he was labeled an 'undesirable foreigner.' Despite these challenges, Ernst found financial success in the 1950s, solidifying his legacy as a master of collage and unconventional drawing methods.

Max Ernst passed away in Paris on April 1, 1976, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to influence artists today.
