Max Mallowan

Max Mallowan, born on May sixth, nineteen oh four, was a distinguished British archaeologist renowned for his expertise in the Ancient Near East. His academic journey began at Oxford University, where he studied classics, laying a strong foundation for his future endeavors in archaeology. Under the mentorship of notable figures such as Leonard Woolley at Ur and Reginald Campbell Thompson at Nineveh, Mallowan honed his skills and developed a passion for uncovering the past.

Throughout his career, Mallowan directed numerous archaeological expeditions, many of which were sponsored by the British Museum and the British School of Archaeology in Iraq. His work not only contributed significantly to the field of archaeology but also led to a personal milestone when he met the famous author Agatha Christie during an excavation at Ur in nineteen thirty. Their partnership blossomed, and he became her second husband.

During the Second World War, Mallowan served in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, showcasing his commitment to his country. After the war, he transitioned into academia, where he made a lasting impact as a Professor of Western Asiatic Archaeology at the University of London from nineteen forty-seven to nineteen sixty-two. His academic journey continued as he became a fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, from nineteen sixty-two to nineteen seventy-one, further solidifying his legacy in the field.
