Max Newman

Maxwell Herman Alexander Newman, known as Max Newman, was born on February 7, 1897, and became a prominent figure in the fields of mathematics, cryptography, and computer science. His contributions during World War II were pivotal, particularly in the realm of codebreaking, where his expertise played a crucial role in the Allied efforts.

One of Newman's most significant achievements was his involvement in the development of Colossus, the world's first operational, programmable electronic computer. This groundbreaking work not only showcased his mathematical prowess but also laid the foundation for future advancements in computing technology.

After the war, Newman continued to influence the field by establishing the Royal Society Computing Machine Laboratory at the University of Manchester. Under his leadership, the laboratory produced the Manchester Baby in nineteen forty-eight, recognized as the world's first working, stored-program electronic computer, marking a monumental step in the evolution of computing.
