Max van der Stoel

Max van der Stoel, born on August third, nineteen twenty-four, was a prominent Dutch politician and diplomat known for his extensive contributions to international relations and human rights advocacy. A member of the Labour Party (PvdA), he served as the High Commissioner on National Minorities of the OSCE from January first, nineteen ninety-three, until July first, two thousand one. His academic journey began at Leiden University, where he earned a Master of Laws degree followed by a Master of Social Science degree in Sociology.

Van der Stoel's political career commenced in the early nineteen sixties when he was elected as a Member of the Senate on September twenty-seventh, nineteen sixty. He later transitioned to the House of Representatives, where he served as a frontbencher and spokesperson for Foreign Affairs. His significant roles included State Secretary for Foreign Affairs in the Cabinet Cals and Minister of Foreign Affairs in both the Cabinet Den Uyl and the Cabinet Van Agt II.

After a brief hiatus from active politics, he was appointed as the Ambassador to the United Nations in July nineteen eighty-three, a position he held until August nineteen eighty-six. Following this, he became a Member of the Council of State until January first, nineteen ninety-three. His appointment as the first High Commissioner on National Minorities marked a pivotal moment in his career, emphasizing his commitment to minority rights and human rights.

Upon retiring from active politics at the age of seventy-six, Van der Stoel continued to influence public policy as a non-profit director and educator. He served as a distinguished professor of Peace and Conflict Studies at his alma mater and held a visiting professorship at Tilburg University. His legacy includes the honorary title of Minister of State, granted on May seventeenth, nineteen ninety-one, and his ongoing advocacy for human rights until his passing on April twenty-third, two thousand eleven, at the age of eighty-six.

In recognition of his contributions, the PvdA-associated Foundation Max van der Stoel was established in two thousand thirteen, promoting international solidarity, human rights, and democracy.
