Max Yalden

Max Yalden, born on April twelfth, nineteen thirty, in Toronto, Ontario, was a distinguished Canadian civil servant and diplomat. He pursued his education at the University of Toronto, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in nineteen fifty-two, followed by a Master of Arts in nineteen fifty-four, and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in nineteen fifty-six.

In nineteen fifty-six, Yalden joined the Department of External Affairs, marking the beginning of a notable career in public service. He served as the assistant under-secretary of state from nineteen sixty-nine to nineteen seventy-three, and in nineteen seventy-three, he took on the role of deputy minister of communications.

Yalden's contributions to Canadian society were significant, particularly during his tenure as the second Commissioner of Official Languages from nineteen seventy-seven to nineteen eighty-four. He later served as Ambassador to Belgium and Luxembourg from nineteen eighty-four to nineteen eighty-seven, and from nineteen eighty-seven to nineteen ninety-six, he was the Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

In nineteen ninety-six, he was elected to a four-year term on the United Nations Human Rights Committee, where he was re-elected for a second term in two thousand. His dedication to public service was recognized when he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in nineteen eighty-eight and promoted to Companion in nineteen ninety-nine. Additionally, he received an Honorary LL.D. from Carleton University in nineteen ninety-eight.

Max Yalden passed away in Ottawa, Ontario, at the age of eighty-four due to complications from pneumonia, leaving behind a legacy of commitment to human rights and public service.
