Maxime Bernier

Maxime Bernier, born on January eighteenth, nineteen sixty-three, is a prominent Canadian politician known for his role as the founder and leader of the People's Party of Canada (PPC). His political journey began as a member of the Conservative Party, where he served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Beauce from two thousand six until two thousand nineteen. Bernier held various significant positions in Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Cabinet, including industry minister and foreign affairs minister, before stepping down in two thousand eight.

Before his foray into politics, Bernier built a career in law, finance, and banking. He was first elected to the House of Commons in the two thousand six election, representing the same riding that his father, Gilles Bernier, had held from nineteen eighty-four to nineteen ninety-seven. His tenure in the Cabinet saw him managing key portfolios, and he was later appointed as Minister of State for small business and tourism in two thousand eleven.

In two thousand seventeen, Bernier made headlines during the Conservative Party leadership election, where he campaigned on a libertarian platform advocating for the end of corporate welfare and the abolition of supply management in the dairy industry. Although he finished second, garnering over forty-nine percent of the vote in the final round, he ultimately resigned from the Conservative Party in August two thousand eighteen, citing disagreements with the leadership.

Following the formation of the PPC, Bernier faced challenges, including losing his parliamentary seat in the two thousand nineteen election. Since then, he has attempted to regain a seat in various elections, including Beauce in two thousand twenty-one and two thousand twenty-five. His political stance includes opposition to mass immigration, support for stricter abortion regulations, and a rejection of the scientific consensus on climate change, alongside his controversial positions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
