Maxime Verhagen, born on September fourteenth, nineteen fifty-six, is a distinguished retired Dutch politician and historian. A prominent member of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), he held the esteemed position of Deputy Prime Minister of the Netherlands from two thousand ten to two thousand twelve under Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
Hailing from Maastricht, Verhagen pursued his academic interests in contemporary history at Leiden University, where he earned a Master of Arts degree. His political career began as a consultant and campaign manager for the CDA from February nineteen eighty-six until July nineteen eighty-nine, leading to his election as a Member of the European Parliament in the European parliamentary election of nineteen eighty-nine.
In nineteen ninety-four, Verhagen transitioned to the House of Representatives, where he served as a frontbencher and the party spokesperson for Foreign and European Affairs. Following the election of two thousand two, he succeeded Jan Peter Balkenende as the parliamentary leader. Verhagen was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Cabinet Balkenende IV on February twenty-second, two thousand seven, and later took on the role of Minister for Development Cooperation in February two thousand ten.
After the two thousand ten elections, Verhagen was selected as the successor to Balkenende as party leader and returned to the House of Representatives as Parliamentary leader. He played a crucial role in forming the Cabinet Rutte I, where he served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation starting on October fourteenth, two thousand ten. Following the cabinet's dissolution, he announced his retirement from active politics at the age of fifty-six.
Post-retirement, Verhagen has remained active in both the private and public sectors, taking on roles as a corporate and non-profit director. He has served as Chairman of the Construction Association since July two thousand thirteen and became a member of the Social and Economic Council for the Industry and Employers Confederation (VNO-NCW) in October two thousand fifteen.
