Maximinus Daza

Galerius Valerius Maximinus, known as Daza, was born on the twentieth of November in the year two hundred seventy. He emerged as a significant figure in Roman history, serving as emperor from three hundred ten until three hundred thirteen. His rise to power began in three hundred five when his uncle, Galerius, appointed him as caesar within the Tetrarchy, a decision that sparked controversy and ultimately contributed to the civil wars that plagued the empire in the following year.

In three hundred ten, Maximinus Daza claimed the title of augustus, a move that set him on a contentious path alongside Licinius, with whom he frequently contested authority. A staunch pagan, he is remembered for his role in one of the final persecutions of Christians, marking a significant chapter in the religious history of the Roman Empire. Notably, he was the last individual to hold the title of Pharaoh of Egypt, a testament to his influence during a transformative period.

The year three hundred thirteen saw a turning point in his reign as he openly opposed Licinius, leading to a decisive confrontation at the Battle of Tzirallum. Following a defeat in this battle, Maximinus Daza met his end during the retreat, shortly after issuing an edict of tolerance that aimed to restore freedoms to Christians, highlighting the complexities of his rule and the shifting tides of religious policy in the empire.
