Maxine Waters

Maxine Waters, born on August fifteenth, nineteen thirty-eight, is a prominent American politician, teacher, musician, and singer. She has been serving as the U.S. representative for California's forty-third congressional district since nineteen ninety-one, making her a significant figure in American politics. Her district, which was numbered as the twenty-ninth from nineteen ninety-one to nineteen ninety-three and as the thirty-fifth from nineteen ninety-three to twenty-thirteen, encompasses much of southern Los Angeles, including parts of Gardena, Inglewood, and Torrance.

A dedicated member of the Democratic Party, Waters is currently in her eighteenth term in the House of Representatives. She holds the distinction of being the most senior among the thirteen black women serving in Congress and chaired the Congressional Black Caucus from nineteen ninety-seven to nineteen ninety-nine. Additionally, she is the second-most senior member of the California congressional delegation, following Nancy Pelosi. From two thousand nineteen to two thousand twenty-three, she chaired the House Financial Services Committee and has been the ranking member since two thousand twenty-three.

Before her tenure in Congress, Waters made her mark in the California State Assembly, where she served seven terms after being first elected in nineteen seventy-six. During her time as an assemblywoman, she was a vocal advocate for divestment from South Africa's apartheid regime. In her congressional career, she has been an outspoken critic of the Iraq War and has not hesitated to challenge the policies of Presidents George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump, consistently voicing her dissent.

In recognition of her influence and contributions, Waters was included in Time magazine's list of the one hundred most influential people in two thousand eighteen, solidifying her status as a key player in American political discourse.
