She is best known for her role as Layla El-Faouly, also known as Scarlet Scarab, in the Marvel Studios miniseries Moon Knight, which premiered in two thousand twenty-two. This role marked a historic moment as she became the first Egyptian and Arab superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Raised in a multicultural environment, Calamawy was born in Bahrain to an Egyptian father and a Palestinian-Jordanian mother. Her upbringing spanned across Bahrain, Qatar, and the United States, enriching her perspective and artistic expression. She pursued her passion for the performing arts by earning a Bachelor of Arts in theatre studies from Emerson College and further honing her craft at the William Esper Studio in New York.

Calamawy's acting journey began in independent cinema, where she made her feature film debut in the two thousand six film Thursday. She continued to build her portfolio with a series of short films and gained recognition for her performances in the Hulu comedy-drama Ramy from two thousand nineteen to two thousand twenty-two, as well as in the films Together Together in two thousand twenty-one and The Actor in two thousand twenty-five.
