MC Lyte

Lana Michele Moorer, known to the world as MC Lyte, was born on October 11, 1970. She is a multifaceted American artist, celebrated not only as a rapper and songwriter but also as an actress, television announcer, and businesswoman. MC Lyte is widely recognized as a trailblazer in female rap, having made her mark in the late 1980s with her groundbreaking debut album, 'Lyte as a Rock', released in nineteen eighty-eight. This critically acclaimed work featured iconic singles such as '10% Dis' and 'Paper Thin'.

In nineteen eighty-nine, she became a member of the supergroup Stop the Violence Movement, contributing to the impactful single 'Self Destruction', which achieved the distinction of being the first number-one single on the Billboard Hot Rap Singles chart. That same year, her second album, 'Eyes on This', made history as one of the first albums by a female solo rapper to chart on the Billboard 200, featuring the hit 'Cha Cha Cha'.

MC Lyte's career continued to flourish in the early nineties with the release of the hit single 'Poor Georgie' in nineteen ninety-one, marking her debut on the Billboard Hot 100. By nineteen ninety-three, she had made history again as the first solo female rapper to earn a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) with her single 'Ruffneck'. Her collaborations with prominent artists like Janet Jackson and Missy Elliott further solidified her status in the music industry.

Throughout her illustrious career, MC Lyte has collaborated with a plethora of mainstream artists, including Sinéad O'Connor, Will Smith, and Beyoncé, and has been a source of inspiration for many women in hip hop. In twenty twenty-three, she was honored by Billboard & Vibe as one of the fifty greatest rappers. Her accolades include the 'I Am Hip Hop' Icon Lifetime Achievement Award from the BET Hip Hop Awards and recognition at the VH1 Hip Hop Honors. Notably, in October twenty fourteen, she became the first female artist to perform hip hop at the White House.

In addition to her music career, MC Lyte has ventured into voiceover work, writing, and directing, making her directorial debut with the short film 'Break Up In Love' in twenty twenty-two. She is also dedicated to philanthropy, actively working with her own foundation, Hip Hop Sisters, to support various charitable causes.
