Whitman served as the United States Ambassador to Kenya from July 2022 to November 2024 under President Joe Biden, marking a notable chapter in her career.

Before her ambassadorship, Whitman was a formidable political figure, having run for governor of California in the 2010 gubernatorial election. Despite her efforts, she lost to former Governor Jerry Brown, receiving forty-one percent of the vote compared to Brown's fifty-four percent.
