She served as the fifth president from two thousand one to two thousand four, following the impeachment of her predecessor, Abdurrahman Wahid, under whom she held the position of vice president from nineteen ninety-nine to two thousand one.

As the eldest daughter of Sukarno, Indonesia's first president, Megawati has been a significant figure in the country's political landscape. She is the founding leader of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), one of the largest political parties in Indonesia, which has played a crucial role in shaping the nation's democratic processes.

In the two thousand four presidential election, Megawati sought re-election but was defeated by Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
