Mehdi Karroubi

Mehdi Karroubi, born on September twenty-six, nineteen thirty-seven, is a prominent Iranian Shia cleric and reformist politician. He is the leader of the National Trust Party and has played a significant role in Iran's political landscape, particularly as a voice for reform and change. His political journey has been marked by his tenure as the speaker of the parliament from nineteen eighty-nine to nineteen ninety-two and again from two thousand to two thousand four.

Karroubi's commitment to reform was evident during his candidacy in the presidential elections of two thousand five and two thousand nine. Following the protests that erupted after the two thousand nine elections, he faced severe repercussions, leading to his house arrest in February two thousand eleven. As of two thousand twenty-five, he remains confined to his home, a testament to the ongoing struggles faced by reformist voices in Iran.

Described as a moderate politician with a predominantly rural support base, Karroubi identifies as a pragmatic reformist. He has been a key figure in the Iranian Green Movement, advocating for democratic reforms and greater civil liberties. His critical stance towards the Guardian Council and Iran's Judicial System highlights his commitment to transparency and justice in governance.

In addition to his political endeavors, Karroubi is a founding member and former secretary-general of the Association of Combatant Clerics party. His influence extended to the Expediency Discernment Council, where he served as a member and adviser until resigning from all his posts on June fifteenth, two thousand five, following the first round of the two thousand five presidential election.
