Mel Counts

Mel Counts, born on October sixteenth, nineteen forty-one, is a distinguished former American basketball player who made his mark in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from nineteen sixty-four to nineteen seventy-six. A proud member of the United States Olympic basketball team, Counts contributed to the team's gold medal victory at the nineteen sixty-four Summer Olympics. He honed his skills playing college basketball for the Oregon State Beavers before being selected by the Boston Celtics in the nineteen sixty-four NBA draft.

During his time with the Celtics, Counts was part of a championship-winning team, celebrating NBA Championships in nineteen sixty-five and nineteen sixty-six as the backup to the legendary Bill Russell. However, his journey took a turn when he was traded to the Baltimore Bullets for the nineteen sixty-seven season. Midway through that season, Counts found himself with the Los Angeles Lakers, a team that would reach the playoffs that year.

Counts' tenure with the Lakers was marked by three consecutive trips to the NBA Finals, where they faced fierce competition. Notably, in the nineteen sixty-nine NBA Finals, Counts stepped in for an injured Wilt Chamberlain during a critical moment in Game 7, helping the Lakers narrow the deficit against the Celtics. Despite their efforts, the Lakers fell short, losing the series four to three. Counts continued to play for one more season with the Lakers before being traded to the Phoenix Suns, eventually returning to the Lakers in nineteen seventy-three and concluding his career with the New Orleans Jazz in nineteen seventy-six.

After retiring from professional basketball, Counts transitioned into a successful career as a real estate agent in Salem, Oregon, as of two thousand six. His legacy continues through his family, with his sons Brent, Brian, and Chris all playing college basketball, and his grandsons also pursuing the sport at various institutions. Notably, mixed martial artist Chael Sonnen is his nephew, further highlighting the athletic prowess within the Counts family.
