Mel Tillis

Mel Tillis, born on August 8, 1932, was a prominent figure in American country music, celebrated for his remarkable talents as a singer-songwriter and musician. His career began in the late 1950s, but it was during the 1970s that he truly made his mark, becoming a key player in the outlaw country movement. With a string of Top 10 hits, Tillis captivated audiences with songs like 'I Ain't Never', 'Good Woman Blues', and 'Coca-Cola Cowboy'.

One of his most notable contributions to music was the composition 'Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town', which became a worldwide sensation in 1969 when recorded by Kenny Rogers. Tillis's songwriting prowess and unique voice earned him a special place in the hearts of country music fans.

In recognition of his significant contributions to the arts, President Barack Obama awarded Tillis the National Medal of Arts on February 13, 2012.
