Meles Zenawi

Meles Zenawi, born on May eighth, nineteen fifty-five, in Adwa, Ethiopia, was a prominent politician and military leader who played a pivotal role in shaping modern Ethiopia. He was the son of an Ethiopian father and an Eritrean mother, and his political journey began after he changed his name from Legesse to Meles in honor of a fellow student executed by the Derg government in nineteen seventy-five. This event propelled him to leave Haile Selassie I University and join the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) to combat the oppressive Mengistu Haile Mariam-led regime.

By nineteen eighty-nine, Meles had risen to the position of chairman of the TPLF and later became the head of the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) following its establishment in nineteen eighty-eight. His leadership was instrumental in the EPRDF's victory during the Ethiopian Civil War, leading to his appointment as president of the Transitional Government of Ethiopia from nineteen ninety-one to nineteen ninety-five, and subsequently as the second prime minister from nineteen ninety-five until his passing in two thousand twelve.

Under Meles's administration, Ethiopia transitioned to a system of ethnic federalism, advocating for the recognition of diverse ethnic groups and their rights to language, culture, and land. His tenure saw the historic secession of Eritrea in nineteen ninety-three, followed by a devastating war between the two nations from nineteen ninety-eight to two thousand, which resulted in significant loss of life. Despite the economic growth that characterized his leadership, Meles's government faced criticism for its authoritarian practices, including the suppression of civil liberties and violent crackdowns on dissent.

In the two thousand five general election, Meles's EPRDF claimed victory amidst allegations of electoral fraud, leading to widespread protests and tragic violence in Addis Ababa. Nevertheless, he implemented major reforms aimed at addressing drought, expanding education, and enhancing agricultural productivity, which contributed to Ethiopia becoming one of Africa's fastest-growing economies. Meles Zenawi passed away in Brussels, Belgium, on August twentieth, two thousand twelve, leaving behind a complex legacy that continues to be studied and debated.
