Meletius of Antioch

Meletius of Antioch, a prominent Christian patriarch, served the Church from three hundred sixty until his death in three hundred eighty-one. His tenure was marked by significant conflict, primarily due to the Meletian schism, which arose from his rivalry with Paulinus II of Antioch. This schism not only defined his episcopate but also led to his exile on three separate occasions: from three hundred sixty-one to three hundred sixty-two, three hundred sixty-five to three hundred sixty-six, and again from three hundred seventy-one to three hundred seventy-eight.

Despite facing opposition from Arian emperors and being at odds with those loyal to the pro-Nicene Eustathius of Antioch, Meletius remained a steadfast figure in the Church. His theological stance was complex, as he was both exiled for his beliefs and revered by many. His ascetic lifestyle was particularly noteworthy, especially considering his considerable private wealth.

One of the defining moments of his later life was presiding over the First Council of Constantinople in three hundred eighty-one, a significant event in the history of Christianity. Meletius is venerated as a saint and confessor across various Christian denominations, including the Roman Catholic, Oriental Orthodox, and Eastern Orthodox churches. His feast day is celebrated on the twelfth of February, honoring his contributions and legacy within the faith.
