Melissa Auf der Maur, born on March seventeenth, nineteen seventy-two, is a multifaceted Canadian artist known for her contributions as a singer-songwriter, musician, and photographer. She began her musical journey in nineteen ninety-three, forming the indie rock band Tinker while studying at Concordia University. Her career took a significant turn in the summer of nineteen ninety-four when she joined the American alternative rock band Hole as their bassist, contributing to several of their releases, including the acclaimed album Celebrity Skin in nineteen ninety-eight.
After departing from Hole in nineteen ninety-nine, Auf der Maur briefly toured with The Smashing Pumpkins in two thousand before embarking on her solo career. Her debut studio album, Auf der Maur, was released in two thousand four under Capitol Records, followed by her second album, Out of Our Minds, in two thousand ten, which she released through her independent label, PHI–MAdM Music. Throughout her career, she has collaborated with notable artists such as Indochine, Rufus Wainwright, Ric Ocasek, and Neverending White Lights.
In addition to her music career, Auf der Maur is an accomplished photographer and occasional actress. Her photographic work has been featured in National Geographic and exhibited at Sotheby's. She has also appeared in films such as How to Make the Cruelest Month in nineteen ninety-eight, Beyond Borders in two thousand three, and Collaborator in two thousand eleven. Her multidisciplinary project, Out of Our Minds, launched in two thousand nine, showcased her talents as a film and record producer, working alongside her husband, filmmaker Tony Stone.
As creative directors and owners of Basilica Hudson, an arts and performance center in Hudson, New York, Auf der Maur and Stone continue to contribute to the cultural landscape.
