Melissa Etheridge

Melissa Etheridge, born on May 29, 1961, is a celebrated American singer-songwriter and musician known for her powerful voice and emotive songwriting. She burst onto the music scene with her self-titled debut album in 1988, which achieved underground success and peaked at No. 22 on the Billboard 200. The lead single, 'Bring Me Some Water', earned her a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female in 1989, setting the stage for her remarkable career.

Following her debut, Etheridge released her second album, 'Brave and Crazy', in the same year, which garnered her two additional Grammy nominations. Her third album, 'Never Enough', released in 1992, featured the hit single 'Ain't It Heavy', which won her first Grammy Award. However, it was her 1993 album, 'Yes I Am', that marked her mainstream breakthrough, with tracks like 'I'm the Only One' and 'Come to My Window' reaching the Top 40. This album spent an impressive one hundred thirty-eight weeks on the Billboard 200, peaking at No. 15 and achieving six times Platinum certification from the RIAA.

Etheridge continued to build on her success with her fifth album, 'Your Little Secret', released in 1995, which peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200. The album included popular tracks such as 'Nowhere to Go' and 'I Want to Come Over'. Despite facing personal challenges, including a breast cancer diagnosis in 2004, Etheridge made a triumphant return to the stage at the 2005 Grammy Awards, performing a tribute to Janis Joplin. Her compilation album, 'Greatest Hits: The Road Less Traveled', released later that year, was a commercial success, peaking at No. 14 on the Billboard 200.

Throughout her career, Etheridge has released sixteen studio albums, with her most recent being 'One Way Out' in 2021. Known for her confessional lyrics and raspy vocals, she has also been a prominent advocate for gay and lesbian rights since her public coming out in January 1993. Among her accolades, Etheridge has received two Grammy Awards from fifteen nominations and an Academy Award for Best Original Song for 'I Need to Wake Up' from the film 'An Inconvenient Truth'. In 2006, she was honored with an Honorary Doctor of Music Degree from Berklee College of Music, and in 2011, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
