Meryam Joobeur

Meryam Joobeur is a talented Tunisian Canadian film director, screenwriter, and writer, renowned for her impactful storytelling and cinematic vision. Born in the United States and raised in both the U.S. and Tunisia, she moved to Montreal, Canada at the age of seventeen, where she has since established her creative career.

Joobeur gained significant recognition for her 2018 short film, Brotherhood (Ikhwène), which not only won the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival Award for Best Canadian Short Film but also earned a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film at the ninety-second Academy Awards. This film marked a pivotal moment in her career, showcasing her ability to tackle complex themes with sensitivity and depth.

Before Brotherhood, she directed and wrote the short films Gods, Weeds and Revolutions in 2012 and Born in the Maelstrom in 2017. Her journey in filmmaking continued to evolve as she embarked on her debut feature film, which entered development in 2021 under the working title Motherhood. Joobeur's participation in the Sundance Screenwriters' Lab at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival further solidified her standing in the industry, where she was awarded the ten thousand dollar Sundance Institute/NHK Award to support the film's production.

Her latest work, Who Do I Belong To (Mé el Aïn), premiered at the seventy-fourth Berlin International Film Festival, further establishing her as a significant voice in contemporary cinema.
