Mi Fu

Mi Fu, born in the year one thousand fifty-one in Taiyuan, was a multifaceted artist of the early Song dynasty, celebrated for his contributions as a painter, poet, calligrapher, and art theorist. His innovative landscape painting technique, known as 'Mi Dots', involved the application of broad, wet ink dots with a flat brush, creating a distinctive style that set him apart from his contemporaries.

In addition to his visual artistry, Mi Fu was a gifted poet whose work was influenced by the renowned poet Li Bai. His calligraphy, inspired by the legendary Wang Xizhi, positioned him as one of the four major calligraphers of the Song Dynasty, alongside Su Shi, Huang Tingjian, and Cai Xiang. His notable works include the Zhang Jiming Tie, Li Taishi Tie, Zijin Yan Tie, and Danmo Qiushan Shitie, with the Shu Su Tie, also known as Nigu Shitie, exemplifying his mastery of running script calligraphy.

Mi Fu's approach to calligraphy was characterized by a blend of traditional styles and innovative elements, which he described as 'a collection of ancient characters'. This unique perspective not only reflected his meticulous nature but also paved the way for his son, Mi Youren, to adopt and reinterpret his artistic style. Beyond his artistic prowess, Mi Fu was known for his distinctive personality, which further enriched his contributions to the cultural landscape of his time.
