Michael Jerome Cooper, affectionately known as "Coop," was born on April 15, 1956. He is a distinguished American basketball coach and former player, renowned for his remarkable career with the Los Angeles Lakers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Throughout his tenure with the Lakers, Cooper was instrumental in securing five NBA championships during the iconic Showtime era, showcasing his exceptional skills on the court.
Cooper's defensive prowess earned him recognition as an eight-time selection to the NBA All-Defensive Team, with five of those selections on the first team. His outstanding performance culminated in being named the NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 1987. In 2024, he was honored with induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, a testament to his significant contributions to the sport. The Lakers further celebrated his legacy by retiring his No. 21 jersey in 2025.
Transitioning from player to coach, Cooper found success leading the Los Angeles Sparks in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), guiding them to two championships. He also coached the Albuquerque Thunderbirds to an NBA G League title and has held coaching positions across the NBA, WNBA, and the NBA Development League. From 2021 to 2023, he served as the head coach for boys basketball at Culver City High School in California, before taking on an assistant coaching role for men's basketball at California State University, Los Angeles.
