Michael Jeffery, born on December twelfth, nineteen thirty-seven, is a distinguished Australian politician and military officer. He served as the twenty-eighth governor of Western Australia from nineteen ninety-three to two thousand, and later as the twenty-fourth governor-general of Australia from two thousand three to two thousand eight.
Hailing from Perth, Western Australia, Jeffery graduated from the prestigious Royal Military College, Duntroon. His military career is marked by significant service during the Malayan Emergency and the Vietnam War, where he was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery and leadership.
Throughout his military tenure, Jeffery held various prominent positions, including commander of the Special Air Service Regiment and the 1st Division. He eventually rose to the rank of Deputy Chief of General Staff before retiring from active service in nineteen ninety-three.
Following his retirement, Jeffery's public service continued as he took on the role of Governor of Western Australia for seven years. In two thousand three, he was appointed Governor-General of Australia, making history as the first career Australian Army officer to assume this esteemed position. He was succeeded by Quentin Bryce.
