Michael L. Gernhardt, born on May fourth, nineteen fifty-six, is a distinguished retired NASA astronaut and a prominent figure in the field of environmental physiology. He has served as the manager of the Environmental Physiology Laboratory and has been the principal investigator for the Prebreathe Reduction Program (PRP) at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center.

Selected as an astronaut in March nineteen ninety-two, Gernhardt has an impressive record of four space shuttle missions: STS-69 in nineteen ninety-five, STS-83 and STS-94 in nineteen ninety-seven, and STS-104 in two thousand one. Throughout his career, he has spent more than forty-three days in space, during which he completed four spacewalks that totaled twenty-three hours and sixteen minutes.

In addition to his shuttle missions, Gernhardt was a key participant in NASA's first NEEMO mission, which took place in an underwater habitat. His contributions extended to subsequent NEEMO missions, where he played a vital role in simulating environments akin to those found on the Moon, Mars, and asteroids.
